Competition and performance: evidence for Australia

This paper investigates the association between the intensity of competition and performance in Australia. Survey data from Australian workplaces (1995) are used to assess the association between competition and productivity growth. The main finding is that only in workplaces where there is no principal owner working does competition appear to raise productivity growth. In addition, accounting data from large firms (1994-97) are used to assess associations between R&D intensity and competitive conditions. Here the main finding is that R&D intensity is highest when competitive conditions are ‘strong’ rather than ‘intense’.
